Day 1: Arrival at the “Heart” of Lake Baikal, Olkhon Island
After arriving at Irkutsk Airport, head to Olkhon Island, about 300 km away. Winter travel options include both shared rides and private transfers.
• Shared Ride: If you’re traveling with a small group, shared rides are more affordable. The journey takes about 6 hours. You can also take a hovercraft, though it incurs an additional fee.
• Private Ride: If your flight arrives late or if you’re traveling with a larger group, booking a private ride is more convenient. Prices typically start from around 1000 RMB (subject to actual bookings).
Olkhon Island is the largest of the 22 islands on Lake Baikal, often called the “heart” of the lake. Half of the island is covered by pristine forests, while the other half consists of grasslands, with a small portion being desert. Khuzhir (Хужир) is the largest settlement on the island, featuring traditional Russian-style wooden houses nestled between forests and plains.
Day 2: North Olkhon Island Tour
After breakfast, travel across Olkhon Island by Russian-style minivan, heading towards Khoboy Cape (Khoboy). The North route features expansive blue ice, which looks crystal-clear under the sunlight, and spectacular rock formations along the way—definitely a highlight of your trip.
Day 3: South Olkhon Island Tour
Today, explore the southern part of Olkhon Island. You’ll encounter “bubble ice,” crack ice, and ice caves, all of which offer unique and mesmerizing views, perfect for photography.
Day 4: Return to Irkutsk
In the morning, return from Olkhon Island to Irkutsk by shared ride or private transfer. The trip takes about 6 hours. If you have time in the afternoon or evening, you can explore the 130th Quarter or Irkutsk Central Market.
