Why Summer at Lake Baikal is a Must-Visit:

While most people know about the stunning blue ice of Baikal in winter, the lake is a wonderful summer destination too. With its cool, clean waters, Baikal is the perfect summer retreat. Some might wonder, “What’s so special about the lake during summer?” The answer is: a chance to understand the place beyond just the iconic winter landscapes.

Top Summer Experiences at Lake Baikal:

1. Baikal Ring Railway

Why Experience It:

The best way to experience Baikal’s breathtaking scenery is by riding the Baikal Ring Railway. On a leisurely train ride, you get to connect with a 25-million-year-old lake. The steam train is a unique way to travel, and the Baikal Ring Railway is considered one of the most scenic and meaningful railroads in Siberia. It runs between the mountains and the lake, taking you through hidden, stunning natural landscapes—far more enjoyable than driving by car.

About the Train Ride:

The entire journey takes around 8 hours, with stops at about six stations for sightseeing and photography. Along the way, you’ll pass through ancient tunnels, museums, piers, and charming little rural stations.

Route Options:

Route 1: Irkutsk Train Station (8:00 AM) → Sluyanka (10:00 AM) → Baikal Ring Railway (10:45 AM) → Baikal Port (6:30 PM) → Listvyanka

Route 2: Listvyanka Dock (7:30 AM) → Baikal Port (8:00 AM) → Baikal Ring Railway (10:00 AM) → Sluyanka (5:00 PM) → Irkutsk Train Station

• June 11 – July 1: Sunday/Monday, Thursday/Friday

Notes:

There are both steam and electric trains to choose from, with the steam train being particularly popular but only operating on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. If your schedule is tight, you can take a bus back from Listvyanka to Irkutsk. Food options on the train are limited and a bit pricey, so it’s recommended to bring your own snacks. The ticket price is about 9000 RUB per person.

2. Traditional Russian Sauna

If you’re in the mood to unwind, try the Russian sauna, a quintessential part of the experience. The sauna ritual involves alternating between hot steam rooms and cooling down in pools with a temperature of around 15°C. You can also enjoy being gently hit with birch branches, which promotes circulation and gives off a wonderful natural aroma. This experience is far healthier and more invigorating than any spa treatment.

Hours of Operation: 9:00 AM - 10:00 PM

Price: 2800 RUB per hour
